Between its behemothic bings, pits and mineral railways, the shale oil industry has left deep and lasting scars in the countryside around Winchburgh, but a more subtle eye may yet catch a glimpse of a holloway, a metalled track or an ancient ruin. A place name may hold a shadow of a suggestion of its origins, or an old map preserve the route of a burn or a drovers way, long lost to the modern folk memory.
While Winchburgh may not be unique in regard to its wealth of rich historical layers, it has kept very quite about them all.
